100-Page Summer Intensive Workshop

Virtual

August 8 - 11, 2024

Futurescapes is an intensive, exclusive workshop, offering writers an unparalleled chance to work with top authors and agents in speculative fiction (science fiction, horror, fantasy, paranormal). This summer, we’ll be exploring the first 100 pages of your manuscript. The workshop sessions will require work outside of meeting times as there is a generative nature to it.

This workshop is smaller and more competitive than our regular workshop. In addition to workshopping a larger portion of your manuscript (25,000 words), we’ll have plenty of unstructured and semi-structured time to network with fellow students and faculty.

This is the bulk of your workshop! This session will focus on providing feedback on the 100-page submissions from your group. This is your chance to discuss your editorial letter and have any of your questions answered, as well as hear additional feedback on your work.

Pitch Perfect with Marvellous Michael Anson

In this generative class, you’ll explore how to find the elements of your story that make it stand out, and how to use those elements to spin the perfect pitch for a query letter or submission.

Story Visualization Workshop

Remember that story structure class? In this session, you’ll bring the structure you’ve generated for feedback.

Excerpt Revisit

Following your first excerpt workshop and story structure workshop, you’re probably buzzing with ideas. This shorter session is the time to bring your revision ideas and get feedback on your plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We make a promise both to you and our faculty that we will not accept your hard-earned tuition money unless your writing is at least approaching professional level. Our faculty love Futurescapes because they know that the writing will be of an exceptionally high caliber. They don’t do Futurescapes just for the fun of it, they want make connections, too, and find potential clients.

  • Acceptance rates vary by workshop, but generally Futurescapes is as competitive as admissions to many top tier graduate programs. The Fall workshop has a lower student cap and is likely to be more competitive than most.

  • We prefer you make your tuition payment within two weeks. We also participate in the PayPal Pay-in-Four (or Pay-in-Three) program that allows you to pay in installments over a longer period of time.

  • We’re looking for a few things:

    1. Mastery of the fundamental mechanics of writing.

    2. Compelling plot, characters, dialogue, and world.

    3. Evidence of at least one standout attribute (e.g., sharp dialogue, great humor, impressive world building, etc.)

For this workshop, we require your submission piece to be from the work you plan on bringing to the workshop.

  • You will need to submit your up to 25,000-word excerpt, trigger warnings, and a brief (1-paragraph) description of the work as one document by July 15, 2024.

  • This workshop differs in structure than our Spring and Fall workshops. While you wilo have sessions working on your story structure and pitch, they will be, in part, generative.

You will have several classes as well as workshop sessions moving in the same cohort.

Included with your tuition are master classes taught by our incredible faculty.

You will have about a 4 hour block each day of the workshop. You should also plan on dedicating an additional 4 hours each day to the generative and revision work of the workshop.
